Any expert would tell you that Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) revolves around 4 key points:
  1. Content
  2. Links
  3. Design
  4. Engagement
In today's post we're going to discuss these points to help you boost your search engine rankings.

Creating the Content People Wish to Read

Simple one really. If you want to be found, if you want to be read and if you want to get online sales then you need good content. Work on your content, it's 70% of the challenge I personally find.

Reasons why Content is Important

If you have a sparse website with little content then Google won't send people to you.

If you have good website with unique, detailed, articles then Google will prefer you to sites which churn out the same, repetitive and un-orginal content.

Having a lot of good quality text on your web pages means you will use lots of other  industry terms no doubt. For an SEO webite, for example, they'd mention marketing, internet marketing, social media and other related keywords on their website. So if you have lots of content then no doubt you'll use lots of these "related terms" as a result you will show up on Google for MORE keywords - This means MORE traffic. Diversity is good. Still stay specific to your industry though - but don't focus on just the one search term.

Inbound Links - A vote for your website

OK, inbound links, what are they?
They're links from other websites that point to your website.

The key thing about inbound links are, in a way, if a website links to you it must be because you're good. Because they recommend you. Therefore it's a vote of confidence and as a result Google and other search engines look at all the links that point to your website, count them up and then uses that information to aid them in deciding where to rank your website in the search engines. As a result link building is a vital pillar for SEO success.

In the article Different ways to work on SEO I speak on some ways to get links.

It's all in the design (well, at least a fair bit)

Search engines take into consideration how long someone stays on your website, if they browse to other pages and this helps them know whether your site is worth sending people to or not. If you use Google Analytics look at your bounce rate for your website pages. As long as you have a sample of over 400 website visitors to that page, make sure the bounce is below 50%. If it's not, look at that page and see if it has any design or usability errors.

Define Bounce Rate: You have different types of bounce rates (so check what you're seeing the bounce rate for) but a bounce is someone leaving your site in a set time.

When looking at the web design aspect of SEO make sure you also add some social bookmarking buttons to your website. Also make sure you have a good footer & top navigation. Also ensure your site reads well - checking your typography, font size and line height.

Engage your Reader

OK, it's easy to write content. Just churn out 300 words, wack it online and wait for the money to come in.... WRONG and stop thinking so poorly of your readers.

Good content gets results, poor content sucks. Make sure that you focus on engaging your readers, create good page titles and encourage people to get involved.

  • Ask them to leave comments
  • Ask them to share the content on social bookmarking websites
  • Distribute content that is relevant and helpful
